Shocking sight of the flooded Austrian A2 motorway: with video documentation

September 17, 2024

The recent heavy rainfall caused significant damage in Austria, particularly on the A2 highway and the surrounding infrastructure. The flooding resulting from the rainfall completely inundated certain sections of the highway on Sunday evening, making travel impossible in several areas. As a result of the early Monday morning restoration work, the A2 highway is now passable again, though, according to reports from the Wirtschaftsblatt, many on-ramps and off-ramps remain inaccessible. There are also problems on other roads in Lower Austria, where closures are impeding traffic.

The video shared by Austrian MeteoNews 24 of the highway deeply submerged in water shocked the public, highlighting the severity of the flooding. Besides the roads, the flooding has caused serious disruptions in public transportation as well. The Austrian Federal Railways, ÖBB, halted train services between Hegyeshalom and Vienna from 6 PM on Sunday, as conditions did not permit safe travel. According to the company's statement, there is currently no possibility of train replacement, and the suspension is expected to last until midnight on Monday. While authorities work to restore infrastructure operations, drivers and travelers are urged to plan their routes carefully and, if possible, avoid the affected areas.
