Romania will surpass the psychological threshold of 1,200 km of highways in 2024. What are the promises for 2025?

November 11, 2024

Romania faces challenges in developing its highway infrastructure, but it intends to take significant steps to promote these developments. The country anticipates surpassing the 1,200-kilometer highway milestone by 2024, and plans suggest that 2025 could also be a successful year regarding expressways, as the committed developments include the construction of more than 300 kilometers of new sections.

In mathematical terms, however, if Romania wants to reach the EU's average road density, it would need a total of 4,220 kilometers of roads, as noted by the UNTRR report on the road transport market for 2018-2030. Currently, for instance, Bulgaria's highway density is nearly double that of Romania, with 7.3 kilometers per one thousand square kilometers. In August 2023, Romania surpassed the 1,000-kilometer mark within its highway network, aiming to exceed 1,200 kilometers by the end of 2024. According to calculations by Newsweek, based on the promises made in the contracts, by the end of 2025, the country's road network, including highways and expressways, is expected to reach 1,500 kilometers.

Among the new developments is the A0 highway, also known as the Bucharest Ring Road, which includes sections such as the Bucharest South (DN6 – A1) section 3, which is 17.97 kilometers long, as well as section 3 (Afumați – Cernica) in the northern part of Bucharest, which is 8.6 kilometers long.
