Huge news: a new motorway could be established in Hungary

August 29, 2024

The construction of the M100 expressway has been on the agenda for decades, and the government has now made significant progress in this matter. The goal is for all county-level cities to be accessible via four-lane expressways, and currently, Esztergom is one of the cities that does not yet have such a road network. The M100 connects the M1 motorway with Esztergom over a 32.3-kilometer stretch. This project promises to be one of the most complex road construction projects ever in Hungary, as it requires the construction of three tunnels and several valley bridges. Such technical solutions are rare in Hungary, posing a special challenge for the contractors. Previously, the construction was divided into two phases. The main components of the first phase include four grade-separated junctions, 26 bridges, and a simple rest area in Örspuszta combined with an axle weight measurement station. The second phase includes two grade-separated junctions, an additional 26 bridges, three pairs of tunnels, noise barrier walls, and embankments. Tamás Menczer, Member of Parliament for Pest County's 2nd constituency, also emphasized that it is of vital interest for the region that the M100 and M10 expressways be completed. The traffic jams in the morning hours for those heading towards Budapest, as well as the increased heavy traffic caused by 40-ton trucks, are extremely taxing for smaller settlements in the region, such as Piliscsaba, Pilisjászfalu, Páty, and Perbál. In discussions with János Lázár, the Minister of Construction and Transport, it became clear that the government supports these road infrastructure projects, which aim to alleviate transport difficulties and support the development of the region.
